Quick answer
Clean new windows in this order: dry-remove loose dust, soften stickers and labels with a safe solution, lift paint with a plastic or fresh razor blade held flat, then wash and squeegee the glass. Vacuum tracks and sills last. Never scrape dry glass with a dull blade.
New windows look finished and are not. Between the glazier, the painter and the drywall crew, the glass collects stickers, tape residue, overspray and a layer of fine dust that smears when wiped dry. A good window clean is mostly about order and patience.
Work In the Right Order
Dust first, liquid second. Wiping a dusty pane with a wet cloth turns drywall dust into paste that sits in the frame. Vacuum the frame, track and sill, then start on the glass.
- Vacuum frames, tracks and sills with a soft brush attachment
- Remove stickers and tape and soften the adhesive
- Lift paint and plaster spots with a flat blade on wet glass
- Wash with clean water and a squeegee
- Detail frames and wipe sills dry
Stickers, Tape and Adhesive
Manufacturer labels and protective films are easiest to remove soon after install. Heat and time bond them harder. Use a plastic scraper and a glass-safe adhesive remover, then rinse the residue so it does not smear across the pane.
Check Before You Scrape
Some windows have coatings or tempered patterns that do not tolerate metal blades. Ask the builder or check the window specification before using a razor on any glass.
Paint Overspray and Plaster Spots
Fresh paint wipes off. Cured paint needs a lubricated blade, light pressure and a flat angle. Keep the glass wet so the blade glides instead of grinding any grit across the surface. If you see scratches starting, stop and reassess.
Do Not Skip the Tracks
Window tracks hold construction dust, sawdust and debris that will blow into the room the first time the window opens. Vacuum first, then wipe with a damp cloth. This is the detail that separates a quick wipe from a real final clean.
